Typography Vs Web

I love printing as much as I love designing for printing.

In my years of experience as a Typographic designer, photographer, print supervisor and art director (So you know I have seen a thing or two) there is a phrase haunting me and making me question all the things I learned.

“There is NO future in printing design”

I can understand how those people came to that conclusion… It’s the web advertising industry.

I have to put my opinion on the other side of the table.

I sincerely don’t think that a printed ad and the impression it creates can be outmatched by a web ad.

The Web is a medium that has the biggest reach range of all the mediums available. But this advantage is a disadvantage against something that is printed. The web is meant to reach, not to gain trust. Computers and their problems can be really complicated sometimes and their scams are also known to the public.

The buyer, in order to buy, needs to feel safe, so the ad must gain their trust as much as it has to make an impression. Yet, we all know that there is always a risk when you first meet someone, even bigger when you pay that someone for a product.

In other words you need to meet in person and if that isn’t possible, learn as much as possible about them.

So, this thought makes us question how much we can know about a product or a business through a website???

You can see if the site is beautiful, you can see if it is usable and in general in which characteristics the owner has put his faith in.

But then again you also have these benefits with something that is printed, but furthermore you can feel it with three senses, vision, touch, smell, hey I will add even hearing because you might even get some information on how the paper sounds when its torn.

In other words, paper(or material to be printed) is a medium that gives more information and gains more trust along with credibility.

My opinion is that the printing industry is in no danger because I believe that printed material and web are two parts of a whole and if any part is missing, you just don’t get the desirable result.

So to all you advertisers around the world I have to say that reaching a lot isn’t enough, you have to convince them with something solid, something they can feel and connect to.

The Pharaohs of Egypt were exceptional people. Their legacy is still visible and not even the rain or wind could erase a history a few thousands of years old. Still there are myths about them that is hard top swallow.

He is often regarded as the greatest, most celebrated, and most powerful pharaoh of the Egyptian Empire. Yet his lifeless body is in a museum. There is no evidence that any of the Pharaohs did indeed rise from the tombs.

There is the belief that the Pharaohs could put a curse on anyone entering their tombs after death. However, Carter was the only western man to find a sealed tomb. All the others were open, the treasure looted. Still what about the curse? After they entered the tomb of King Tut, a few of the men involved in the project, including Carter himself died unexpectedly and thus the theory of the curse remained.

Aliens

The third myth is that the Pharaohs were not from Africa but from somewhere far away. They were from another planet if you can believe Alien followers. The story is that the Pharaohs looked different and the fact that the Pharaoh Akhenaton had a longish shaped head places him in the centre of the Alien theory. The fact that science proved he had a physiological defect will never stop this theory.

Conclusion

The Pharaohs of Egypt were exceptional men and looking at Egypt today one can see why the theory that they were not Egyptians could be true. But then again you need faith to believe they were gods, that they were aliens, or that they could rule from the grave. Why they were so successful and how they managed to create such a remarkable empire is a mystery that died with them while the myths about them lives on.

Simply Violin: Sing. Play. Learn. Favorite Songs for Violin in First Position is a new book for beginning violin students. I have been teaching violin and viola for nearly 30 years and am always looking for new ways to inspire and teach my students. It can be difficult to keep today’s children interested in learning violin — especially when they are assigned unfamiliar songs and exercises. Although Suzuki has been considered the Gold Standard almost since Book One for violin first came out in 1978, I have always found the songs to be rather dull. I also think the level of difficulty rises far too quickly. In contrast, Sing. Play. Learn’s songs are all intended to be played in first position, and every song can be played with or without using the fourth finger of the left hand.

After using the book for about 6 months, I have had good luck with it. I appreciate that there are 80 songs, more than contained in any other violin book that I can think of. And, yet, the children know most of the tunes and enjoy playing music that they recognize. The parents also are happy to hear recognizable tunes and are more able to help their children to learn them. Plus, the musical editing is very clear, the bowings and articulations well thought out, and there are no page turns within songs.

Another aspect of the book that I like is that it is divided logically into sections that feature fingerings such as first finger low, second finger high, etc., introduced separately. The book also has lyrics for each song. I have found that if a student is having trouble with pitch or rhythm, it can be helpful to sing the song first along with the student, so that he or she can make the connection to the notes and rhythms on the page. Because of its logical division of songs, fingerboard and note reading charts that Suzuki does not have, and arrangement in order of increasing difficulty, I do consider this to be a method book as well as a song book, and, thus, a possible competitor or at least supplement to Suzuki Book One. As an accompaniment book is also available, all of the songs can potentially be used in recitals, another strength.

I have found this to be a very well thought out book and am glad to have it in my teaching studio. However, to name just the few quibbles I do have with the book, I would like to see a page introducing beginning rhythms and possibly also some pictures showing correct bow hold, position for holding the violin, and proper positioning of the feet, as well as other instructional images, as are incorporated in the latest release of Suzuki Book One. However, because the book is unique in the market for beginning violin books, I think it is worth considering despite lacking these items.

I hope this book also comes out for viola, as there are even fewer good song books for viola than for violin.

We all learn about the “mask of pregnancy” or “melasma” in residency as a dermatologist. However, until I saw what it was doing to my own best-friend during her pregnancy, I didn’t appreciate its full impact! To look blotchy all over the face… and having her picture taken while looking like that… my friend turned to me for help!

The bad news is that the most effective treatments for discoloration are not safe in pregnancy. These include the retinoids as well as hydroquinone. The good news is that there are several things one can do to fight back nonetheless!

How to fight back melasma in pregnancy: 1. Wear a great sunscreen every day. Even on a cloudy day there are UV rays! Choose SPF over 30 to help protect against melasma, and skin cancer. 2. Avoid the sun. Wear pretty hats. Sit in the shade. Avoid the hours of 11am-2pm for doing anything outdoors. 3. Use products that contain a Vitamin C and E. They are anti-oxidants 4. Buy products that contain glycolic and kojic acids, which are safe treatment options during pregnancy. Most dermatologists can get you a prescription strength formula. 5. Melasma is no fun! It really can impact the quality of life during and after pregnancy. It is fortunately treatable! Careful clinical exam is the key to aggressive and appropriate treatment!

And, of course, I am happy to say that my bestfriend, looks great today! The regiment of creams, and chemical peels have turned her skin back to a uniform gorgeous color. She is glowing - partly because she is such a loving mom, and partly because her skin is so healthy!
